Day 33: I’ll see you on the creek side

Today’s tour is another home in Quail Lake. I’m trying to provide a lot of diversity in the types of homes I write about, but some days it’s just crazy hard to get to one that’s any further than a half a mile from my own home, which means Quail is my default on those time crunch days. The beauty of today’s house is that, although is is in Quail Lake, it is in a section of the community that many people don’t even know exists!

The Quail Lake community is divided into many small sub-neighborhoods and they all have names. There is Meadowside, which is very close to the park with a playground; Mountain View, which has a spectacular view of the Sequoias; The Cove, which is a secluded nook with a private waterway, and several more. The neighborhood where today’s house is located is named Creekside.  It’s a section that has it’s own entrance gate and is only accessible from the interior of the community via a charming foot bridge.

This adorable 3/2 house is nearly 2000 sf and looks brand new. It is situated on a generous sized corner lot that looks out onto the bridge and pathway to the main gate section of the community. Walking in, I was amazed at how clean it is! From the cream colored carpets and walls to the immaculate kitchen and bathroom fixtures, if I didn’t know better I would think this house had never been lived in. The spacious and open great room area makes the house feel much bigger than it actually is. The large master bedroom has adorable, shuttered French doors that open out to the beautifully, yet simply, landscaped backyard.

Being the kitchen fanatic that I am, of course I noticed the stylish granite countertop on the massive island.  A whole lot of food prep or party mingling can happen in that kitchen!



This house is definitely a winner. Not many homes for sale in Quail Lake are in the sub-$350k  price point, so when one comes around and it’s in as great shape as this one, it won’t be available for long. Sure enough, between the time that I toured this house at 9am and when I got to the office at 10:30, it sold! Incredible. So, dear friends, this gem is no longer available. If Quail Lake is where you’d like to call home, let me know!   I’ll be happy to keep my eyes peeled for more great opportunities.



Day 27: A Stark Comparison


A May 2016 survey¹ revealed that nearly 3/4 of Americans are in favor of land use regulations that increase access to public transportation and other non-vehicle transit options. The overwhelming majority of people in favor of these changes are younger than age 50. Given current efforts in and around Fresno to make such changes with high speed rail and bus rapid transit, it seems that Gen Xers and Millennials around here may soon be pleased.

One transportation option that often gets overlooked is bike commuting. Fresno claims to be a bicycle-friendly city, and it has certainly increased the presence of bike lanes on many city streets, but not nearly enough for bike commuting to be easy around here. Insufficient bike lanes makes bike commuting dangerous if you don’t take proper safety measures. This is particularly true in regions that don’t actively promote such activity because drivers are not accustomed to sharing the road with non-vehicles. I would love to see a major overhaul in Fresno and Clovis that would allow for an increase in the presence of bike and pedestrian trails and lanes to give residents another viable option for their daily commute. The owners of Sunnyside Bicycles in Fresno are also committed to increasing bike riding as sport, exercise, leisure, and commuting. They are so dedicated to the cause that they are hosting a clinic called Bike Commuting 101: Go By Bike later this month.

The house I toured today is on the same block and is the same model as one from a few days ago in Quail Lake. At first I was hesitant to profile a house so similar to one I already wrote about. However, my mind was changed when I walked in and realized just how different these two houses are, despite being exactly the same model. It’s incredible how much different design choices can change the aesthetics of a house. Take a look for yourself!

The photographs on the left of each grid are from the first Fieldstone house, the ones on the right are from the second. They both have the exact same square footage, lot size, and number of rooms, but they look so very different just by adding a variety of finishing touches. Which one do you prefer?




Day 22: Almost Fall, Almost Home

Here it is, the last day of August.  Fall will be upon us in just three short weeks!  Of course, we all know that around here that doesn’t mean a whole lot.  Our trees only see a hint of fall colors and our activities remain firmly “summer” for at least another month.  But it’s coming! And I am totally ready.

Even if the outside temperature stays closer to 90 than 60, we can still embrace the coming of the next season. I plan to “will” fall into existence soon as possible by making small changes to the decor in and around my house. Even if we don’t feel it in the air, we can still see it in our homes! Isn’t this fall-inspired centerpiece just gorgeous?

The house I toured today is located in the Quail Lake community, which I also happen to call home. Writing about this house practically feels like cheating because I actually lived in a house on the same block as this one for a time and I’m fairly sure my former home was designed by the same builder as this one. This house is a lovely, single-story, four bedroom house with custom tile and wood floors throughout and a very modern kitchen.

There are two things I really love about that stand out from the “sameness” of most tract homes: 1) the ceiling fan in the living room is HUGE!  I mean, it practically looks like a helicopter propeller.  It’s quite impressive. 2) I adore the side-by-side double pantry in the kitchen.  It seems so intuitive to have the extra kitchen storage, yet so many houses are designed with skimpy pantry space. There are many other lovely features in the house as well. I saw stylish detail in the master bathroom tile, beautiful plantation shutters on many of the windows, and generally a good use of the square footage.  It feels very open and comfortable.

The backyard is on the smallish side, but my personal expectation is based on my super-active children who demand space to explore their world.  It would be just fine for a family that doesn’t require ample room to roam for a couple of bustling boys. Both the front and back yards are nicely landscaped and have been well maintained  while the house has been on the market.  This is a really nice space to call home.  I would be surprised if it doesn’t get gobbled up in a heartbeat.
